Description Supervisor, Central Transport Summary:
Supervise, the day-to-day Central Transport department operations including scheduling, daily assignments, training, and equipment usage. Insures that the staff’s assignments/ duties are completed such that established standards for timeliness, service and productivity are adhered to.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following: Other duties may be assigned.

1.0 Manages personnel to ensure a well developed cohesive work force to meet patient care needs as it relates to all aspects of transportation services within the institution.

1.1 Responsible for human resource functions related to interviewing, hiring, and retention, of staff.
1.2 Initiates and maintains appropriate personnel records.
1.3 Assists in the implementation of on-going educational programs which include new employee orientation, in-service continuing education, and new equipment and/or systems training which enables the staff to perform on the basis of current policy/procedures.
1.4 Functions as a staff role model by promoting cooperative problem solving, positive progressive discipline, individual and group goal orientation, appropriate delegation of departmental activities and the building of the esprit de corps through individual coaching and counseling, regular attendance at staff meetings, annual performance appraisals, and active participation in the activities of the department.
1.5 Performs on-going written performance reviews according to hospital policy.
1.6 Provides ongoing feedback to employees concerning job performance. Counsels and disciplines employees, when necessary.
1.7 Serves as a resource to appropriate QI teams.
1.8 Completes special projects as assigned.

2.0 Engages in fiscal activities in order to ensure the availability of supplies, equipment, and human resources to meet patient care needs in a timely cost effective manner.

2.1 Monitors on a continual basis all personnel and current expense budgets providing information and/or justification of variances to the Manager
2.2 Makes recommendations for preparation of the budget for his/her cost center annually to assure cost effective operations.
2.3 Assists in the verification and validation of payroll reports, intervening as appropriate to ensure adherence to institutional payroll policy and procedures.
2.4 Monitors current expense and human resource funds for his/her cost center cost effectively.
2.5 Spends funds in dollar amounts which are congruent with the departments budget and is reflective of cost containment.
2.6 Assures the most economical utilization of time, materials and resources through the review of workflow and staffing patterns in order to achieve optimal productivity and to provide cost effective staffing patterns that ensure appropriate utilization of staff.

3.0 Maintains effective communication with patients, staff, and other departments as necessary to assure identification of problems and provide problem resolution in support of the hospital's mission of quality patient care delivery.

3.1 Communicates effectively with nursing staff, and other personnel in problem identification and resolution in a timely manner.
3.2 Through daily rounds, assesses staff satisfaction issues and takes appropriate action to resolve.
3.3 Promotes customer satisfaction through response to customer perceptions of services provided in a professional and constructive manner. Ensures the establishment and implementation of a culture that is responsive to all issues.
3.4 Participates in various activities (i.e. staff meetings, in-services, etc.) to assist the Manager in the dissemination of necessary information to staff, and others by written and/or verbal means.
3.5 Assists the Manager in the dissemination of necessary information from prepared reports (i.e. workload, financial, utilization, etc.).
3.6 Communicates employee concerns to Manager, as applicable.

4.0 Assures the adherence of all standards and policies as set forth by WVUH and the accrediting bodies for the purposes of licensure, regulation and accreditation.

4.1 Reviews and evaluates quality improvement reports for legibility, completeness, accuracy, and appropriateness in conjunction with the Manager.
4.2 Assures the completion of quality control procedures, and appropriate documentation.
4.3 Participates in the development, review, and communication of policies and procedures ensuring information is available for staff in a timely manner.
4.4 Assists the Manager in coordinating all departmental function in preparation for inspection by accrediting agencies, and for licensure, ensuring compliance.

5.0 Facilitates the professional development of personnel. Oversees and participates in the orientation, training, and continuing education of the staff.

5.1 Directs and monitors the instruction, supervision, and evaluation of new employees within the department.
5.2 Assures staff personal and professional growth by giving in-services, and monitoring staff orientation plans as applicable.
5.3 Identifies current and anticipates future departmental educational needs. Collaborates with Education Specialist & staff in the development of departmental education plan, including evaluation of the process and outcome, and facilitation of staff participation.
5.4 Improves and maintains management skills by participating in self-development activities such as seminars, workshops, classes and literature review.

6.0 Participates in outreach activities in the community, i.e. Speaker's Bureau, in order to educate and/or promote good relationships.

7.0 Performs other duties/projects as assigned.

Position Requirements Education and Experience:
o High school graduate or equivalent educational level
o Bachelors degree preferred
o Previous experience with JCAHO surveys preferred
o Previous patient transport experience in an institutional facility preferred
o Previous supervisory experience preferred

Other Qualifications:
o Must possess a high level of interpersonal skills and poise to deal with individuals on all organizational levels
o Must possess good verbal, written and decision making skills
o Must be flexible with hours and days available for duty
